The Asia Pacific AERONET Calibration and Training Center (APAC) marked a milestone with its first training session on November 11, 2024, in Taipei, Taiwan. This training, held in the Ministry of Environment, Taiwan, as part of the 2024 7-SEAS Workshop, aimed to advance air quality monitoring and climate research.
More than 40 participants from various government agencies, educational institutions, and research centers across Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and Bangladesh attended the event. This diverse group of professionals gathered to enhance their skills in atmospheric aerosol monitoring. The resource persons from APAC, along with project co-lead of AERONET project of NASA, Dr. Pawan Gupta, provided the training to the participants.
Training Details
The training course provided an in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of Cimel Sunphotometers. Key topics included:
1. Theoretical Background: Participants were introduced to AERONET and APAC, the basics of Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), and the working principles of Cimel Sunphotometers.
2. Hands-On Training: This segment included detailed instructions on the different parts of the Cimel Sunphotometer, precautions for handling the instrument, installation procedures, and troubleshooting common issues.
3. Data Download and Visualization: Attendees learned how to download AERONET data from the AERONET website and interpret key parameters such as AOD, Angstrom exponent, and inversion products. They also practiced plotting and analyzing AOD data.
4. Data Application: The final part of the training focused on the application of AERONET data in satellite data validation, enhancing the integration of ground-based and satellite measurements.
APAC, dedicated to enhancing the AERONET network through precise calibration services and specialized training programs, continues to foster regional collaborations aimed at addressing critical environmental issues.
